This was a particular concern with the imagery around water and the eponymous whale tattoo, but this all makes sense. The story assumes a non linear structure, almost like throwing broken pieces on the ground and arranging them into a collage, an epic of loss and ultimately hope.

BecaWith no smartphones or internet, and a set of characters who are sometimes deeply homophobic, it has a timeless quality and could be set at any time from the 1960’s to the present day. The story assumes a non linear structure, almost like throwing broken pieces on the ground and arranging them into a collage: an epic of loss and ultimately, hope. From one of the most acclaimed debut novelists of 2022 author of The Whale Tattoo, winner of the Polari Prize First Book award 2023, Jon's new book The Gallopers is a visceral and mesmerising novel. Jon Ransom’s The Whale Tattoo is a haunting debut novel set in a Norfolk seaside town brimming with bottled up resentment.

That’s because, despite its glide through feeling and time, the novel scratches an itch that few books can reach. It’s Ransom’s raw reflection on life, his recognition of the brutality that transforms moments of passing rapture into something dreary, that leaves the reader entranced.

Under his watchful gaze, Eli discovers a world he knows nothing about with rules he cannot understand. This book felt reminiscent of something like a Max Porter or an Andrew Michael Hurley, at the same time shot through with shades of Douglas Stuart. Jon Ransom is the author of The Whale Tattoo, which was shortlisted for the Polari First Book Prize 2023, and named a Guardian Best Fiction of 2022. The plot was often a little predictable, but there is a great voice in the main protagonist that perfectly captures the feeling of life in a small UK coastal town. Soon, the love that they each have in their lives overflows into hate that may very well destroy them.

Because of this, local residents think the fields are cursed and respond by acts of hooliganism towards the property. As time goes on and we learn more about them, the characters gain more complexity giving the story a rich texture. Ransom has written a hypnotic and even more mysterious second novel…This is a lust-drenched, ache-filled gay love triangle of sorts that gnarls into a sly emotional thriller. He developed The Whale Tattoo at Arvon Fiction: Work in Progress retreat, after winning a place on the 2018 Arts Council England TLC Free Read Scheme. That restlessness that keeps you up all night, when the moon is as bright as a dinner plate licked clean, won’t last for ever. It was just too confusing for me, and if there's someone who has more patience and tolerance who can make an educated guess to explain it to me, I'll be more than happy to read it again with a fresher perspective.
