Description

Lin's portrayals of the maids and their employers bring out their very different personalities and conflicts: reserved Cora and her overly involved Ma'am Elizabeth, brazen Donita and critical Mrs. It has a mystery going through it which was very attention grabbing however the lives of these poor domestics were unbelievably difficult, made worse by the Singapore women of the house. I’m more sad there wasn’t as much depth about migrant Filipino women living shamefully and being horribly treated in Singapore as housemaids. On it's own, it might have made for some in-depth observations, perhaps a further exploration of how this particular migration pattern evolved, the culture of emigration from the Philippines into service across the globe.

It's a story about abuse and injustice, but it is also a mystery surrounded by friendship and compassion. The bottom line is that if you turn off you brain and enjoy it on a very superficial level, you'll enjoy it. Poignant, intelligent yet wickedly funny – a delightful read that reignites one's belief in the power of sisterhood’ June Sarpong --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.Balli Kaur Jaswal's latest novel is The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters (Harper Collins/William Morrow). Working as an in-home caregiver for an elderly employer, Angel is feeling blue after a recent breakup with the woman she loves. By the end of the month, it was reported that Joshua Jackson, Christopher Jackson, Adepero Oduye, Omar Dorsey, Blair Underwood, Famke Janssen, William Sadler, and Aurora Perrineau had also joined the cast. Corazon, Donita, and Angel are Filipina domestic workers—part of the wave of women sent to Singapore to be cleaners, maids, and caregivers. where they have to fight for space with all the other foreign workers in the few tiny public spaces and the even fewer private spaces they are allowed to inhabit.

Angel, has a position that has been good but circumstances in the household have changed and she now is not only uncomfortable, but she is also unsafe. I was often shocked by the rudeness, disrespect and abuse levelled at other human beings on display. Now You See Us by Balli Kaur Jaswal is a well crafted women's fiction, taking a dig at the issues faced by the immigrant workers. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

But Cora’s and Angel’s troubles are no match for those of proud, young, persistent Donita, who’s stuck working for the vicious Mrs.Donita enlists the help of Cora and Angel to prove Flordeliza’s innocence, though getting close to the crime risks unleashing secrets that would destroy them all. Corazon, Angel and Donita all have secrets that they are hiding, not just from their employers but also from each other.

However, I think part of that is because I expected more of a plot, so if I had gone in expecting to just learn about some people’s lives, it probably would’ve gone much smoother. Personally, if I was going to read about people in this situation I would prefer it to be a non-fiction account.I enjoyed this book set in Singapore and told from the perspectives of various Filipino home workers/service workers.
