This book is full of suspense and Ali Land who has quite a different style of writing succeeds in gripping the reader and encourages them to read just one more chapter again and again. Mike and his wife have a teenage daughter of their own, named Phoebe, who, unaware of Milly's past, is jealous of the time her father spends with Milly.

This is a perspective which is fast becoming a trend going by my recent reads: victim lit or, perhaps more appropriately, survivor lit. Her voice demands that we listen to her and it’s fascinating to hear about her coping mechanisms while adjusting to a new home, a new (albeit temporary) family, a new school at which she’s bullied, the tentative moves she takes towards making friends, preparing for and having sessions with her foster father/counsellor and giving testimony during the trial. As promised, this is a very controversial novel, one that really set my teeth on edge, and made my stomach churn with apprehension, really making me squirm. Ali Land holds a degree in Mental Health and her prior career as a nurse in this field contributes to her understanding of the subject she presents in this compelling debut. This is a chilling debut novel that does not flinch in the picture it paints of the traumatic consequences of a monstrous childhood for fifteen year old Millie. The question looms as to whether the psychological damage this young girl has endured for years, can be repaired, or will the urge to commit the sins of her mother take hold?

Yes, the story can be uncomfortable in places but thankfully it’s not graphic about the child murders and the abuse they would have suffered. Good Me Bad Me is dark, compelling, voice-driven psychological suspense by debut author Ali Land: "Could not be more unputdownable if it was slathered with superglue. This is the story of a young woman, her mother is a serial killer and as a child she was witness to things no child should ever be subjected to. If you love to get into the headspace of dark, damaged and complex characters you will really enjoy this book. It soon becomes apparent that the foster family is dysfunctional in its own way and Mike may not be as altruistic as first thought.

She was living alone with her mother when the boys were murdered and disposed of inside the house, all of whom were children of women from the refuge where Milly’s mother worked.Good Me Bad Me closed off in a way that surprised me in a way, a couple of twists were thrown in to this disturbingly intense novel that continued to provoke me to read page after page. Whenever I read anything that predicts a book is predicted to be the next biggest novel of the year, I tend to not raise my expectations too much.
