A lot of sadness in this book, but hope as well, although I have to say I do not like the Shrubs' storyline at all, nor the way Charlotte reacted to her "surprise encounter. The beautiful Castle Deverill, which is connected each of these characters, now stands ruined after a fire.

The part played by "The Shrubs" in this book ( sorry, but I don't want to spoil this treat for you by telling you what they are), was a touch of genius. I didn't really like the ending, it was too much destiny for me, and the epilogue was just random in my opinion. I am so excited to see what happens to these adoring characters and I am hoping the series finishes on a bang but a nice bang if that is possible. As these three daughters of Ireland seek to make their way in a world once again beset by dark forces, Santa Montefiore shows us once more why she is one of the best-loved storytellers at work today. It was quite a treat to find two more books were planned as I very much enjoyed the characters and plot. It lacks the intimacy of the first book, and the feisty characters I'd loved first time round have now become two-dimensional and irritating.

Our son came up with the idea when he was six years old and it's now being made into a movie by Fox Disney, which is beyond exciting. There's nothing better than sinking into a novel and empathising with the characters as they journey through the novel, experiencing both ups and downs. Some books are easy to read as a stand alone, but found on this occasion that it wasn't so easy to pick up the story.

She has seeped her series deep in rich Irish history, she delivers a strong sense of place and presents the reader with a rich cast of main, as well as supporting characters. As the lingering effects of the Great War is felt, followed by the financial crash of 1929, the book focuses on how this impacts on our three main players. I absolutely loved Songs of Love and War (5-star read for me) but this 2nd in the trilogy didn't captivate me as much as Love and War did. It jumps through the years with no pause to appreciate the present, meaning stories are rushed and have no emotional impact. Castle Deverill, nestled in the rolling Irish hills, is home to three very different women: flame-haired Kitty Deverill , her best friend and daughter of the castle’s cook, Bridie Doyle , and her flamboyant English cousin, Celia Deverill .

It is a novel that is grand in scale, as it also traces the heritage of the Deverill Castle and its inhabitants, back to the time of the reign of King Charles II. Kitty herself is raising a young family, but she longs for Jack O’Leary — the long-ago sweetheart she cannot have. I didn't like how the family curse was an actual curse from the 1600s, and that ghosts were actually real.
