The story has some predictable moments, but there are also some unexpected twists that kept me wanting to read on. Some are more eager to get on the trail than others, but when they hear about a missing girl who looks strikingly similar to Maggie, things take a sinister twist. A breathtaking thriller of friendship pushed to the absolute limit – and beyond – amid the dangerous beauty of the Norwegian wilderness. P. Putnam Sons" and Net galley for the opportunity to read this terrific book and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone! An eerie ‘alpine atmospheric’ suspense novel about four friends on a wilderness trip that goes terribly wrong.

Not all the women are thrilled with the idea mountain hiking yet they're always supportive of one another even when they'd rather be on a sunny and warm beach in some other beautiful, exotic location. Tristan cheats on Ginny regularly, (not just with her sister), and Paul has quit his well-paying investment banker job because he was accused of assaulting another woman in an elevator. As the title suggests, it centres around a hike – a hiking holiday, to be precise – of four life-long friends. She also also includes many twists, which always helps to propel a thriller plot no matter what the characters’ likeability is. Deep, dark secrets that reveal that the striking vistas might just so happen to also hide a bounty of dangers.Try as I might, I can never resist any novel with a video gaming, and I was also really curious to see how Drew Magary would weave together elements from video game and folk tale as the blurb suggests. Done and dusted, this one was an absolute home run for me and I cannot recommend it enough for all of you out there looking for your next great read! Overall, The Hike is an solid, entertaining read that I would recommend, especially if you want something fairly easy and fun to read.

Published in August by Chronicle Publishers, the book so beautifully captures the great outdoors alongside realistic friendships. This is also the first time I've read a Lucy Clarke, and I'd def visit her backlist if I'm in the need for a similar read. While perhaps not the most surprising in terms of plot, this is still a book that had me on the edge of my seat. But with the weather coming in and the mountain peak looming, will this foursome make it back alive? Clarke is an intuitive storyteller and her understanding of how a woman may think and feel is implicitly clear in The Hike. I picked it up as a ‘breather’ between some intense non-fiction reads, and I got what I wanted out of it – mindless enjoyment that made me forget about my stresses of the day.

Our characters are very real and relatable, It a little slow in the beginning as we are learning about our main characters, but when the girls hit the track thats when things get dicey, that feeling of being watched, the pressure of the environment looming down on them. And waiting on the trail is someone who’d do anything to keep their secrets buried – and to stop the group walking away alive .

We learn doctor Liz – whose life seems perfect – is about to start a trial separation with her husband (and high school boyfriend). I love a good isolated thriller mystery novel and The Hike is a fabulous example of a destination thriller. When only two of the four hikers make it down from the mountain, the police press them for their story—but soon become suspicious when their accounts just don’t add up.

They are joined by their friend Joni, and set out on what they hope to be an invigorating adventure. Even though it incorporates a number of elements from spec fic genres, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter; it’s going to do its own thing. Holliday is relying on the hope that even though readers may not be sad to see someone killed off, we’ll still want to know how it all ends, and who gets their comeuppance. You want to know so you keep reading, so you can find out if they repair their relationships or if there’s some deeper secret going on there. A big thanks to Harper Collins UK HarperFiction and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Hike will be published in ebook, hardback and audiobook formats on 27 April, with the paperback to follow in September.
